सी.एस.आई.आर.-हिमालय जैवसंपदा प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान, पालमपुर से वैज्ञानिकों की एक टीम ने सीएसआईआर-अरोमा मिशन के अन्तर्गत सोलह मार्च को ऊर्जा एवं सम्पदा संस्थान (टेरी), सुपी, मुक्तेश्वर तथा स्वयंसेवी संस्था, सम्पदा( SAMPADA) के साथ मिलकर गांव सुंक्या, तहसील धारी जिला नैनीताल, उत्तराखण्ड में सगंध फसलों की खेती और आसवन पर एक जागरुकता एवं प्रशिक्षण कार्यक्रम का आयोजन किया,इस क्षेत्र के दबखेड़, सुपी, काफली, लतेबुंगा धनचौली, मनधेर और सलियकोट आदि गांवों से 70 से भी अधिक किसानों ने इस प्रशिक्षण एवं जागरुकता कार्यक्रम में प्रतिभातिगता की, डा. राकेश कुमार, प्रधान वैज्ञानिक एवं सह-नोडल अधिकारी अरोमा मिशन तथा डा. किरण सैणी, वरिष्ठ तकनीकी अधिकारी ने इस क्षेत्र के लिए व्यवसायिक दृष्टि से उपयोगी एवं उपयुक्त सगंध फसलों के बारे में विस्तार से जानकारी प्रदान की, इन फसलों के अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय बाजार में अधिक मूल्य प्राप्त करने के लिए जैविक खेती पर भी बल दिया गया, डा. राकेश कुमार ने बताया कि सीएसआईआर ने इस मिशन के अन्तर्गत भारत में इन फसलों की खेती के लिए 5500 हैक्टेयर से भी अधिक क्षेत्र में विस्तार करने का लक्ष्य निर्धारित किया है, उन्होंने यह भी बताया कि इन फसलों की अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय बाजार में व्यापक संभावनाएं हैं, क्योंकि इन फसलों से प्राप्त सगंध तेल की बहुत अधिक मांग है, जिसे सगंध, इत्र, सुगंध एवं अन्य उद्योंगो द्वारा उपयोग में लाया जाता है, टेरी के वैज्ञानिक डा. नारायण सिंह ने नैनीताल तथा अन्य जिलों में सामुदायिक विकास में टेरी की गतिविधियों तथा भूमिका पर प्रकाश डाला, वैज्ञानिकों का मानना है कि इस क्षेत्र की जलवायु जंगली गेंदे, दमस्क गुलाब, रोजमैरी, जटामांसी और लेवेन्डर आदि फसलों की खेती के लिए बहुत ही उपयुक्त है, किसान प्रति हैक्टेयर क्षेत्र से दमस्क गुलाब के तेल से ही अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय बाजार में 7-8 लाख रुपए प्राप्त कर सकते हैं, किसान इन फसलों के प्रति हैक्टेयर क्षेत्र से लगाने के तीसरे वर्ष से 15 से 20 सालों तक 2.5 से 3 लाख रुपये प्रति हैक्टेयर आमदनी प्राप्त कर सकते हैं, इंदु धुलिया पचौरी, तकनीकी सलाहकार, संपदा स्वयसेवी संस्था ने किसानों को परम्परागत फसलों की अपेक्षा उच्च मूल्यवान फसलों को उगाने का आहवान किया, उन्होंने आगे यह भी बताया कि इस क्षेत्र में सगंध फसलों की खेती से किसानों की आय में अवश्य ही बढ़ोतरी होगी, इस अवसर पर किसानों को खेती के लिए जंगली गेंदे के बीज भी वितरित किए गए। किसानों ने इस कार्यक्रम को सराहा और बताया कि वे इन फसलों को लगाने के लिए इच्छुक हैं क्योंकि दूसरी फसलों की खेती में जगंली जानवरों, मौसम की अनिश्चितताओं के कारण समस्या का सामना करना पड़ता है,वैज्ञानिकों ने सामुदायिक सहयोग से इन फसलों के मूल्यवर्धन के लिए इस क्षेत्र में एक सगंध तेल आसवन इकाई लगाने का सुझाव दिया, वैज्ञानिकों ने उपस्थित किसानों को समूहों में सगंध फसलों की खेती करने का सुझाव भी दिया, ताकि इस आसवन इकाई के लिए पर्याप्त कच्चा माल तैयार कर सकें, इस कार्यक्रम में किसानों द्वारा इन फसलों की खेती, आसवन तथा विपणन के बारे में जाहिर की गई शंकाओं का निवारण विशेषज्ञ वैज्ञानिकों द्वारा किया गया.

A team of scientists from the CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur, Himachal Pradesh a constituent laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research visited Sunquia Village, Tehsil Dhari, District Nainital, Uttrakhand, and organized an awareness cum training program on cultivation and processing of Aromatic crops in Uttrakhand in collaboration with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Supi, Mukteshwar and SAMPADA NGO on 16th March, 2018 under CSIR-AROMA Mission programe. More than 70 farmers from surrounding villages Dubkhed, Supi, Kafli, Latyebunga, Dhanachuli Managhier and Saliyakot etc. participated in this program. Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Principal scientist cum Co Nodal of Aroma Programe and Dr. Kiran Singh, Senior Technical Officer addressed the farmers about the aromatic and industrial crops that are suitable for cultivation in the region. Organic cultivation practices of these crops were emphasized for fetching higher price in the international market. Dr. Kumar informed the gathering that CSIR has initiated a mission program in which more than 5,500 hectares area will be brought under aromatic crops in India and these crops has huge potential in the world market as the essential oils obtained from these crops are used in perfumery, fragrance and other industries. Dr Narayan Singh, Scientist TERI informed the gathering about TERI’s role in community development in Nainital and other districts of Uttrakhand. Scientists are of the view that the climate of the area is suitable for cultivation of wild marigold (Tagetes minuta), damask rose (Rosa damascena), rosemary (Rosemarinus officinalis), jatamansi (Valeriana jatamsnsi) and lavender (lavender (Lavendula officinalis). Damask rose essential oil can fetch about 7 -8 lakh in the international market and farmers can earn about 2.5 lakh to 3.0 lakh per hectares from third year after plantation up to 15 to 20 years. Seed of Tagetes minuta variety ‘Him gold’ was also distributed to the farmers for cultivation. Ms Indu Dhulia Pachouri, Technical Advisor of SAMPADA NGO informed the farmers regarding use of high value crops instead of traditional crops for higher benefits. She told that cultivation of aromatic crops in the region will definitely enhance the income of poor farmers.
Farmers were of the view that they are ready to grow the aromatic crops as they are facing problems from wild animals, weather vagaries. Most of the aromatic crops are not affected by wild animals. Scientists suggested for installation of an essential oil extraction unit by engaging the community in the region for post harvest value addition of these crops. Farmers were told to grow the crops in group mode so that they can produce the sufficient quantity of raw material for extraction of essential oil from distillation unit.
